Cross-slope is the transverse slope of a road or surface measured perpendicular to the direction of travel. On tangent (straight) road sections, cross-slope (also called normal crown) is typically 2% to drain water to the gutters. On horizontal curves, cross-slope transitions to superelevation to counteract centrifugal forces. Cross-slope is set and verified by the grade crew and is a primary quality control check on road construction.
