A witness stake is a reference stake set alongside a primary layout stake or hub to allow recovery of the point if it is disturbed by construction activity. The witness stake records the offset distance and bearing to the primary stake in paint or permanent marker. Witness stakes are standard practice on DOT projects where layout points will be repeatedly disturbed.
