Mulch is sold in cubic yards (bulk) and cubic feet (bags). The calculation converts your area and depth into volume:
Bulk mulch is significantly cheaper than bagged when you need 2+ cubic yards. Most landscape suppliers deliver in 5–10 CY minimum loads. Bagged mulch costs 2–3× more per cubic yard but gives you control over placement and no delivery minimum. For typical suburban landscaping jobs (500–1,500 SF of beds), bulk delivery is almost always the economical choice if the property is accessible.
| Application | Recommended Depth | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| New planting beds | 3–4 inches | Deep enough to suppress weeds and retain moisture |
| Established flower beds (refresh) | 1–2 inches | Supplement existing mulch to reach 3" total |
| Tree rings | 3–4 inches | Keep 6" away from trunk to prevent rot |
| Vegetable gardens | 2–3 inches | Use organic mulch; avoid thick layers near stems |
| Playgrounds / safety surface | 6–12 inches | Must meet ASTM F1292 impact attenuation depth |
| Erosion control on slopes | 3–4 inches | Use erosion control netting to hold in place |
| Pathways / walkways | 3–4 inches | Use bark or wood chip for firm footing |

Start free trialA 10×10 ft area at 3 inches deep needs 0.93 cubic yards of mulch (10 × 10 × 0.25 ft ÷ 27). That's about 15 bags of 2 CF mulch or 10 bags of 3 CF mulch.
2–4 inches is recommended for most applications. 3 inches is the sweet spot — enough to suppress weeds and retain moisture, not so deep it suffocates plant roots. Keep mulch 2–3 inches away from plant stems and tree trunks.
A full-size pickup truck (8-ft bed) holds approximately 2–3 cubic yards of mulch. A bulk delivery truck typically delivers 10–15 cubic yards at a time.
