Trench excavation volume in cubic yards is calculated as: length × width × depth ÷ 27. Spoil volume for hauling is the excavated volume multiplied by the soil swell factor — typically 1.20 (20% swell) for mixed native soils. Backfill volume is the excavated volume minus the pipe displacement and bedding material. For OSHA compliance, trenches deeper than 5 feet require protective systems (sloping, shoring, or a trench box). Trench width should be the pipe OD plus 12 inches minimum on each side for bedding placement and compaction. For a 12-inch pipe, that's a minimum 36-inch trench width. Check your project specs for required clearances.
Trench backfill is the material used to refill the trench after pipe installation. It must be placed and compacted in lifts (typically 8–12 inches) to achieve required compaction (usually 95% Proctor density). Improper backfill causes trench settlement.
Water main: 4–6 ft (below frost line). Sewer main: 6–20 ft (varies by slope requirements). Storm drain: 3–8 ft. Gas: 24 inches minimum cover. Always verify with local utility standards and project specs.
