A backsight is a rod reading taken to a point of known elevation — typically the benchmark — immediately after the leveling instrument is set up. The backsight rod reading is added to the benchmark elevation to establish the Height of Instrument (HI) for that setup. All subsequent foresight readings are subtracted from the HI to determine unknown elevations.
