A foresight is a rod reading taken to a point of unknown elevation after a backsight has established the Height of Instrument. The foresight rod reading is subtracted from the HI to calculate the elevation of the target point. When a foresight is taken to a turning point (to move the instrument forward), it closes the current HI and requires a new backsight from the same turning point.
