Resection is a surveying technique where an instrument is set up at an unknown location and oriented by taking observations to two or more known control points to calculate the instrument's position. It is commonly used when a total station cannot be set up directly over a control point but nearby control points are visible. Resection accuracy depends on the geometry (angle) between the observed control points.
