A turning point is a temporary point used in differential leveling to allow the instrument to be moved forward while maintaining an elevation reference. A foresight is taken to the turning point to close the current HI, then a new backsight is taken from the same turning point to establish a new HI for the next instrument setup. Turning points should be set on stable, hard surfaces to prevent settlement between shots.
